🌍 A stronger cross-border partnership for a cleaner environment!

Experts from Romania and Serbia recently gathered at the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in Bor (Serbia) for the first workshop of a project focused on assessing the environmental risks caused by mining activities in the border region.

Funded through the Interreg IPA Romania–Serbia Programme, the project addresses critical issues such as tailings storage, soil and water contamination, and air pollution in historically affected areas like Moldova Nouă and Bor.

🧪 Researchers and environmental specialists discussed modern monitoring strategies and carried out fieldwork in Mokranje, highlighting the importance of joint efforts in understanding and reducing ecological risks.

“We are glad to host this first workshop and to actively contribute to the development of a cross-border scientific framework that puts real mining-related environmental problems at the forefront. This project is a valuable opportunity to collaborate and propose concrete solutions for a region historically affected by intensive resource exploitation,” said Dr. Daniel Kržanović, representing the Serbian partner.

Dr. Nicoleta Nemeș, project manager representing Politehnica University of Timisoara, stressed that understanding the cumulative effects of mining—such as air pollution, deforestation, and soil degradation—is essential for designing effective and scientifically grounded interventions that protect both people and nature.

🇪🇺 This EU co-funded project strengthens Romanian–Serbian collaboration and contributes to a healthier, more sustainable future for the cross-border region.
