Mining activities, though essential due to the rising demand for copper, have long-term negative effects on the environment and human health. Even after mines close, waste deposits remain a significant source of pollution.
The ERA-MIN_RO-SRB Project is addressing these challenges by assessing environmental conditions and public health risks in the Moldova Nouă – Bor mining area, particularly in the context of climate change.
The project stands out by establishing a multidisciplinary structure, the first of its kind, integrating:
- Microbiological research on environmental factors
- The role of microorganisms in ecosystems
- Innovative solutions to reduce pollution’s impact on health and nature
By adopting a cross-border approach, this project highlights the need for cooperation in managing pollution along the Danube – an effort made possible through EU support under the Interreg IPA Romania-Serbia Programme.
